Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

• Faf du Plessis

Next up on the IPL captain 2022 players is Faf du Plessis. One of the finest overseas players in the history of IPL, he is the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore since the 2022 season. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Shreyas Iyer was in-charge of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League. The elegant batter earlier led Delhi Capitals from the 2018 to 2020 season, leading the franchise to playoffs appearances in the last two seasons. 

Under the captaincy of Iyer, KKR managed to win only six out of 14 games in the 2022 season, and finished on the seventh position in the points table. In 14 appearances, the right-handed batter slammed 401 runs at a strike rate of 134.56. 

Mumbai Indians (MI)

• Rohit Sharma

Arguably the most successful captain in the Indian Premier League history, Rohit Sharma is an inspirational figure in Indian cricket. He started his career with the Deccan Chargers in the IPL 2008, and played a key all-round role in their title victory in the subsequent season. 

In the 2011 season, Mumbai Indians snapped up his services and the rest is history. Impressed by his consistency and leadership skills, MI passed the team’s baton from Ricky Ponting to Rohit mid-way through the 2013 season. With 11 victories in 16 appearances, MI were top-notch with their performances. In the final, they posted 148 and won by 23 runs against Chennai Super Kings. 

The 2015 season witnessed them securing a dominant victory over CSK by 41 runs in the final. Rohit was named Player of the Match with contribution of 50 off 26 balls. A thrilling finale saw them winning by one run against Rising Pune Supergiant in the 2017 season. 

The Mumbai-based franchise met CSK again in the 2019 final. They scored 149 in 20 overs, led by Kieron Pollard’s 41*. Holding their nerves well, MI bowling unit were exceptional to defend the total by one run. Certainly, Rohit’s masterstroke of saving Lasith Malinga for the last over paved the fourth title victory for the team. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

• Sanju Samson

A sweet timer of the ball and a player with gifted ability, Sanju Samson is the leader of Rajasthan Royals since the 2021 season. The right-handed batter was awarded this role due to his consistent contributions for Rajasthan from the 2018-20 season. 

Samson further impressed by slamming 484 runs at an average of 40.33 in his debut season as a captain for the team. He was then retained by the team ahead of the 2022 season. The skilful batter returned with another 450+ runs season and led the team to the final as well.

Delhi Capitals (DC)

• Rishabh Pant

The swashbuckling wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant captained the Delhi Capitals franchise in the 2022 season. He had an experience of leading the team in the 2021 season, as the regular captain Shreyas Iyer was out for a few weeks due to shoulder injury. 

Impressed by his captaincy, the team management decided to retain him as captain for the 2022 season as well. However, DC failed by a whisker to qualify for the playoffs with seven wins in 14 league matches. Personally, Pant had an average season as well, with 340 runs and failing in his ability to finish games. In the 2023 season, David Warner led the team in place of Rishabh Pant, who was unfortunately injured due to an accident in the latter half of 2022. 

The left-handed batter from Australia packed a solid punch in the Indian Premier League with his ability to convert starts into big innings on most occasions. From the 2009 to 2013 season, the southpaw represented Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals). From 2014 to 2021 season, Warner played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, and is widely known for his brilliance for them. He won the orange cap in 2015, 2017 and 2019 seasons. 

In the 2016 season, the opening batter finished second in the batting charts and helped SRH to lift their first and only title in the IPL history. From the 2022 season, Warner has been plying his trade for Delhi Capitals. With much experience and his leadership skills, the Aussie batter will look to lead DC to their first title. So far, he has 6,211 runs in 173 innings, with 58 fifties and four centuries. 

Punjab Kings (PBKS)

• Mayank Agarwal

The top-order batter Mayank Agarwal served as the captain of the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2022 season. In fact, he was one of the only two players along with Arshdeep Singh to be retained by the franchise ahead of this edition. This was due to the fact that Mayank was consistent to score 400+ runs in the last editions for Punjab, and KL Rahul joined Lucknow Super Giants.

However, Mayank could not be proficient enough as a batter and a captain. He could score only 196 runs in 13 games at an average of 16.33. The team managed to win seven out of 14 games, but could not seal the playoffs spot. 

In the 2023 season, Shikhar Dhawan is leading the Punjab Kings side. He replaced Agarwal, who led the team in the 2022 season. Mayank plied his trade for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2023 season. 

Dhawan, fondly known as ‘Gabbar’ is one of the greatest players in the history of Indian Premier League. He stands second in the all-time batting charts with over 6,500 runs, with 50 fifties and two centuries to his name. 

Playing for different teams until 2012, Dhawan cemented his place and found the best form for Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2013 to 2018. He scored 501 runs in SRH’s title victory season in 2016. 

He then played for Delhi Capitals from 2019 to 2021, while maintaining his consistency. He slammed 618 runs to lead the franchise to the final.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

• Kane Williamson

Next up on the IPL captain 2022 players list is the veteran New Zealand batter Kane Williamson, who led the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. He was one of the three retained players along with Umran Malik and Abdul Samad. 

To everyone’s surprise, Williamson could not provide consistent contributions to the side. He garnered only 216 runs at an average of 19.64 in 13 games. SRH also failed to reach the playoffs. 

Due to the poor form, Kane Williamson was released from the Sunrisers Hyderabad side after the 2022 season.

Markram was then chosen as the captain to lead the SRH side in the IPL 2023 as well. In 29 games, he has 706 runs at an average of 33.62, with four fifties. 

Gujarat Titans (GT)

• Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya has turned out to be a successful leader in the Indian Premier League in his debut season. After his impressive all-round performances with Mumbai Indians for a number of years, MI could not retain him due to a maximum of three retentions. He then was approached by Gujarat Titans, and was announced as their captain in 2022. 

Titans topped the points table with 10 wins in 14 league matches. Then, they got past the challenge of Rajasthan Royals in the final by seven wickets to lift the IPL 2022 title. Pandya slammed 487 runs and scalped eight wickets to lead GT to a championship victory.
